A few days await as we all approach and welcome the upcoming New Year. While anticipating a new chapter ahead, we often find ourselves making various resolutions and plans. Alongside our celebrations and festivities, we all should be reminded to prioritize our safety and that of our loved ones. It is important to acknowledge that accidents and mishaps are common during the holiday season, especially the New Year festivities. Hence, we must take certain safety precautions to ensure a joyful and incident-free celebration this upcoming New Year 2024.

1. Never drink and drive.

Alcohol consumption is common during New Year's Eve, but driving under the influence leads to countless accidents each year. It is imperative to have a designated driver or make use of public transportation to avoid any potential disasters.

2. Be wary of fire safety.

This New Year, fire safety should be a top priority. When using fireworks, ensure you purchase them from authorized sellers and follow all safety instructions indicated. Always light them in open spaces away from buildings, wood, trees, closed areas, and near other flammable objects. Secure a fire extinguisher nearby if you can, and never leave fireworks unattended.

3. Preparing your home.

If you plan on hosting a New Year's party, ensure that your home is safe for your guests. Clear any potential hazards such as loose rugs, cluttered pathways, or slippery surfaces. Be cautious of overcrowding and ensure that your guests or visitors know the accessible exits around the house in case of an emergency.

4. Be mindful of your children and pets at home.

If you have children or pets, take extra precautions to ensure their safety during the festivities, especially your dogs, who are very sensitive to the loud noise and fireworks. Keep explosives and other potentially dangerous items out of their reach, particularly away from children. Monitor them closely to prevent accidental ingestion of harmful substances. Inform guests about any allergies or sensitivities your children or pets may have.

Stay with your dogs and comfort them when there are loud explosives.

5. Mind your personal safety.

Be mindful of personal safety during crowded events. Large gatherings during the year-end festivities can lead to pickpocketing and other criminal activities. Keep your belongings close to you, preferably in a bag with a zipper. Avoid flashing expensive possessions and stay vigilant of your surroundings.

6. Discourage celebratory gunfire.

Always be cautious with celebratory gunfire. Unfortunately, in some cultures like in the Philippines, firing a gun into the air is considered a form of celebration during New Year. However, these bullets can cause severe injuries or even death due to ‘ligaw na bala’ when they come back down. In your community, discourage this dangerous practice.

7. Avoid too much drinking or other hazardous activities.

Be mindful of hazardous activities during the New Year. Avoid overindulging in alcoholic beverages, as excessive alcohol consumption greatly leads to accidents, injuries, and health complications. Stay hydrated, consume a balanced diet, and get adequate rest to maintain your overall well-being and greet the New Year in a normal, physical state.

8. Take note of extreme weather conditions.

Depending on the location, New Year's Eve can be accompanied by harsh weather conditions such as snowstorms or heavy rains. Dress appropriately and be aware of any weather warnings or advisories during the New Year.

9. Be careful when traveling during the New Year.

Given that you have plans to travel during the New Year and celebrate the year-end out of town, take extra caution. Inform someone about your travel plans and estimated arrival time. Avoid distracted driving and make regular stops for rest and refreshments to stay alert on the road.

10. The end of 2023 is a time to reflect.

Reflect on the year and set realistic goals for the upcoming one. While not directly related to safety, taking the time to evaluate and plan for the future ensures a well-balanced and harmonious New Year for each and everyone.

A prosperous New Year comes with extra precaution in order for everyone to enjoy welcoming 2024!
